How APSI Supports Fishermen and Families

“For over 30 years, I have found a stable livelihood through my work as a fisherman, providing for my wife and four children. As the ship's chef, I take pride in more than just securing financial stability—I also play a key role in boosting the crew's morale. Serving delicious meals that energize and motivate them brings me a sense of fulfillment. To me, the fishing industry is more than just a job; it sustains families like mine and creates a strong sense of purpose and community.”

Lambeh Kareko

“28 years is not a short time; that’s how long I’ve worked here as a weigher in the receiving and storage area. My wife has also worked here for about 25 years, and even our child once worked here as a trainee. I’ve noticed that most of the fish received at the factory come from purse seine boats, so I believe that purse seine fishing has been crucial in supporting the operations of the factory that employs our family. Thanks to this, we’ve been able to send both of our daughters to university.”

“With just a high school diploma and the courage to follow a friend onto a fishing boat, I’ve worked my way up to becoming a captain on a purse seine vessel. It’s been 17 years since I started in 2008, and I’m proud to be the first in my family to become a fisherman. This job has allowed me to support my spouse, child, and even help my younger sibling through school. Beyond that, working on a purse seine boat has not only improved my family’s financial situation but also helped me build strong connections within the fishing community.”

“I’ve been working on a personal fishing boat since I was a kid, going out to sea with my dad and grandpa who taught me so much along the way. Back then, my parents couldn’t afford to keep me in school, so after finishing junior high school, I decided to become a fisherman. After almost 36 years of hard work, I am now the captain of a purse seine boat. Thanks to this job, I’m able to help my wife start a small business, support my kid’s education, and even pitch in for my three grandkids’ studies.”

Lembeh Batulubang

“For 17 years, I’ve been working on a purse seine fishing boat, and while life at sea is never easy, it’s been a journey of growth and purpose. Becoming the captain has been a major milestone, and it’s through this job that I’ve been able to provide a stable and comfortable livelihood for my family, including my parents. The challenges are real, but the skills and resilience I’ve gained over the years have made it possible to give my loved ones a reliable and fulfilling life.”

Aertembaga

“The fishing industry has been a transformative opportunity for me and my family. Since 2007, which is now 18 years, my hard work in this field has allowed me to send my child to college and provide capital for my wife to start a small business. As the first fisherman in my family, I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. My journey shows how this sector can open doors to education, entrepreneurship, and life-changing experiences—like my dream of introducing my family to air travel and the world I work in.”
